Just found this intersting graphical animation of the new 2006 statistics of the development of our world!

Gapminder is a Stockholm-based non-profit organisation. Their extraordinary interactive graphs help to visualize complex global trends, like the distribution of poverty, in different regions of the world. All animation have also a timeline included and show very well how and where changes occur. The raw statistics would bore you to tears; the web graphs — dynamic, colorful and clear — are utterly compelling.

I took out of these information a very interesting data sheet of emerging markets. In emerging markets, PC ownership remains limited with less than 10% of households owning a PC. In contrast, mobile phone ownership has taken off – 29% of people in emerging markets own a mobile phone. The availability of flexible, pay-as-you-go payment options has contributed to this growth – 74% of mobile phones in emerging markets are prepaid mobile phones.

Interesting to see how one could adapt this to other business areas. Why not pay-as-you-click payments for PC's. So almost everybody could afford haveing a PC at home or in school. This would help to close the gap between the "rich" and the "poor" countries and would allow much faster distribution of computers to families, kids and schools. Where is Dell and HP providing such offers?

Classroom Management in Schulen ein MUSS!

Leider stellen wir bei GenevaLogic immer wieder fest, dass immer noch Computer an Schulen installiert werden ohne dass mittels einer "Classroom Management" Software die PC's kontrolliert und gezielt im Unterricht eingesetzt werden können.

Ein PC basierender Unterricht wird immer wie wichtiger und damit steigt die Anforderung an die Lehrer Computer vermehrt im Unterricht einzusetzen. Wie will aber der Lehrer die 20+ Schüler hinter den Bildschirmen führen und unterrichten? Er braucht dazu eine Software mit der er jeden PC im Klassenzimmer steuern kann und zwar genau nach seiner didaktischen Vorstellung (Didaktik im Netz).

Zweifel? Ich bin im stöbern im Internet auf ein Schülerforum gestossen mit folgendem Inhalt:

So, ich zeig euch mal was super Tolles: Naja, es ist kein Programm, das euch in irgend einer Form nützlich sein könnte, aber ich denke, zumindest einige könnte es trotzdem interessieren. Das ist nämlich die neueste Errungenschaft unserer Schule.

Tja, damit sind wir von nun an gestraft ~~ und wenn das Progi wirklich so einfach zu bedienen ist, wie es auf der Seite da beschrieben ist, dann Malzeit *seufz* Dann kann es bei uns sogar der dämlichste Lehrer bedienen und *omg* das ist weniger toll. Klickt mal unten auf "Wie Vision funktioniert". Das Progi scheint wirklich Narrensicher zu sein ~~ Tja, damit hat sich das Knacken von Passwörtern der Lehrer, um den Internetzugang freizuschalten *omg* dagegen sind sogar wir Informatikschüler wehrlos *seufzelt*

Jo sowas haben wir an unserer Schule. Ist aber ein anderes und wohl nicht ganz so einfach zu bedienen. Letztens hab ich bei uns nen Zettel mit den Passwörtern gefunden. Muss mal ausprobieren ob die funzen.

Ich bin mir sicher, dass jeder einzelne unserer Lehrer das Programm bedienen kann. Aber unsere WIler kriegen hoffentlich auch das geregelt. wir rätseln schon die ganze Zeit, wie wir das irgendwie umgehen können *hm* Bei uns haben es die Informatikschüler sogar mal geschafft mit nem Prof im Raum die Festplatten eines PC's zu klauen xD" Mäuse klauen war ja Standard. Inzwischen ist alles mit Schlössern gesichert.
Ein Zettel mit den ganzen Passwörtern? ui, bei uns liegen die leider nicht so einfach rum. Trotzdem sind wir an einige Passwörter gekommen, aber die werden immer vorsichtiger. Einer aus meiner Klasse wurde erwischt, leider. Aber auch nur, weil der Professor, von dem das Pass war, genau an diesem Tag krank war und da fällt es natürlich auf, wenn mit dessen Account der Net-Zugang gewährt wurde xD" Naja, Pech würde ich sagen ^^ Die Lehrer werden gerade in die Bedienung des Programmes eingewiesen. Unsere Matheprofessorin und die Informatikprofessorin können natürlich schon bestens damit umgehen *grummel* Man sieht dann beim Beamer immer die Symbolleiste des Programmes, wenn sie aus Versehen dran fährt *seufz* Als wenn es nicht reichen würden, dass die Lehrer in den PC-Räumen immer zu zweit sein (Prof + technischer Assistent), wobei einer ganz hinten steht.

Noch Fragen? Ich möchte hier keine Diskussion über die Erziehung von Schülern die standardmässig Mäuse klauen vom Zaun brechen. Fakt ist, dass viele Lehrer sich immer noch scheuen Computer in der Bildung tagtäglich einzusetzen. Wir versuchen mit unseren Produkten dies zu fördern. Die Einfachheit dient dazu, dass jeder Lehrer sofort in der Lage ist die vorhandene Technologie bestmöglich im Unterricht einzusetzen und sich damit auf die Inhalte und nicht auf die Werkzeuge zu konzentrieren. Workshop SpeedLingua and GenevaLogic

Just returned from an exciting and intense workshop with Martin Velasco the founder of SpeedLingua. Earlier this year GenevaLogic and SpeedLingua announced to work together in the distribution of the innovative products of SpeedLingua through the market access GenevaLogic has in more than 30 countries worldwide. We started the distribution of the products in the German speaking markets in spring very successfuly.

Since the first meeting I had with Martin in Geneva late last year I have been impressed about the entrepreneurial spirit that fills a room when Martin enters it. And also from the beginning I was so excited about the innovative idea and technology behind SpeedLingua. You do not know what SpeedLingua is? SpeedLingua is an innovative method and software application based on the principles of the audio-phonology theory and treatment of the ear in real time. By listen to music or by speaking your foreign language the system modulates your wrong frequency to the right one and sends it to your ear. According to the theory that your ear is responsible how you pronounce you can improve your speaking by simply training your ear. The result is amazing: I will post a movie about a Chinese girl taking lessons in English before and after using SpeedLingua or a French guy talking English before and after soon. The reason for this improvement lies in the different native frequency of our languages. Biggest differences are between French and English or Chinese and English.

Now, we here at GenevaLogic believe that classroom management and language lab will be soon the same, means that they will converge. The more the existing equipment in schools not only is used for IT classes the more will increase the demand to use the same infrastructure also for language classes. And there comes SpeedLingua in the game. I strongly believe that this system is one of the few innovative improvements in the way we are able to learn a language. And pronunciation is a key factor to loose the shyness of speaking a foreign language. If you feel secure in speaking simple conversation in a foreign language you become motivated to learn more and to increase your knowledge of grammar and words. The foreign language becomes your friend and not your enemy.

So Martin Velasco and people from our sales and business development (Fränzi, Karin and Ivo) units shared thoughts about how to bring these systems together with our market position and products. Also we were discussing different models to enter the markets. Especially for China we discussed the different experiences we made on both sides. We all agreed on the fact that there is a unique window of opportunity for a powerful market entrance since the next Olympic Games coming up in 2008 will be held in Beijing and the big world exhibition will be held in Shanghai in 2010. What reason is this for languages? Everybody who already tried to take a taxi in Shanghai or Beijing knows what opportunity this means. Simply no one is able to speak English or to understand English. Not to speak about any shops or policemen in the street. Imagine all the visitors from arround the world 2008 in Beijing. Therefore there several projects going on to train all these people in crash courses in English. And that is exactly where we want to step in.

Having now Olivier Bloch setting up our presence in China I am confident that it is also possible for a small company like GenevaLogic to successfully enter into the Chinese market. Even more having such wonderful partnerships like the one with SpeedLingua. It is just great fun to work with such entrepreneurs like Martin Velasco.

What a FON-surprise!

We here at GenevaLogic normally do not receive a lot of presents! But not today: From FON we just received 5 brand new routers for promotional purpose (I guess thanks to the EMEA Fonero Robert Lang). This is great and we enjoyed even more that we could start testing the routers with our own classroom management software for schools. Then just for your ears: we will start a promotion shortly: Vision6 plus a FON router for free for each classroom! Let’s see how this will be received from our market.

I am a big fan (say Fonero) of FON and the whole idea Martin Varsavsky has created! And together with plazes I see even a bigger chance for both ideas.

Jungunternehmer aus der Schule

Hab heute gerade den tollen Artikel in der Coop-Zeitung gelesen – jawohl richtig gelesen: Coopzeitung. Dort wird das Projekt zur Förderung von Unternehmertum in der Schule vorgestellt. Die Titelstory ist aus der Evangelischen Mittelschule in Schiers. Als Ex-Schierser Schüler bin ich natürlich unendlich stolz, dass gerade dort ein solch innovatives Projekt durchgeführt wurde. Die Schüler produzieren mit ihrer Firma myosotis Uhren mit verschiedenen Motiven unter anderem auch mit Verkehrsschilder. Gratulation!

Unternehmertum muss bereits in der Schule vorgeführt und geschult werden. Dann wird sich automatisch auch eine progressive und innovative Unternehmermentalität nach der Ausbildung durchsetzen. Alle weitere Projekte und links hier:

Swissup Ranking

Hier meine, ich geb's zu, etwas späte Reaktion auf den offenen Brief von André Hurst Rektor der Universität Genf an Daniel Borel (Gründer von Logitech und swissup) vom 6.4.2006. In diesem offenen Brief hat der Rektor der Uni Genf erhebliche Kritik an dem Ranking, das von swissup seit mehr als 3 Jahren durchgeführt wird, geübt (Nachzulesen bei der Uni Genf Webseite unter "ancien mot du recteur"). Ich füge hier an, dass ich selber mehrere Jahre mit swissup verbunden war und dass ich deshalb nicht ganz objektiv bin. swissup versucht mit dem Ranking kurz gesagt, die Uni's der Schweiz zu messen und rangieren. Dies soll zu mehr Transparenz und damit Wettbewerb um Studenten führen. Schlussendlich sollte der Student dank dem Ranking in der Lage sei, die Uni nach deren Qualität und nicht nach derer Nähe oder Reputation zu wählen.

André Hurst hat in seinem offenen Brief in der L'Hebdo unter anderem das Ranking mit einer Fotografie verglichen. Er hat darin die These aufgestellt, dass die Qualität einer Fotografie nach der Qualität des Fotoapparates oder des richtigen Blickwinkels gemessen wird. Schliesslich gipfelt der Artikel darin, dass das Ranking mehr schade als nütze.

Nun vorerst mal ist interessant, dass gerade die Uni Genf, deren Rektor Herr Hurst ist, im Ranking nicht überall sehr gut abgeschnitten hat. Zudem muss man verstehen, dass viele der Rektoren der Schweizer Uni's das Ranking von Beginn weg verdammten. Da hat sich doch eine private Institution tatsächlich an die sakrosankte Universitätslandschaft gewagt und will sich sogar anmassen diese zu messen und zu beurteilen. Und dann auch noch erhoben durch Studentenmeinungen. Dies hat schon vor Jahren bei der ersten Veröffentlichung des Rankings zu erheblichen Protesten vor und hinter den Türen gesorgt. Zugegeben: Das Ranking Ausgabe 2005 hatte Lücken und der Rücklauf war bei gewissen Uni's wirklich miserabel – was natürlich zusätzliche Fragen aufwirft. Mit der notwendigen Unterstützung durch die Universitätsleitung wäre da vielleicht auch noch mehr zu holen.

Dabei hat das Ranking nur gutes im Sinn. Jeder Studienplatz kostet uns pro Jahr zwischen Fr. 17'000 und 50'000 je nach Studienrichtung. Wenn man bedenkt, dass die Wahl des Studienplatzes vorwiegend durch gegebene Entscheidungswege und Informationen getätigt wird, so ist das bereits aus volkswirtschaftlicher Sicht bedenklich. Kommt dazu, dass dadurch oftmals Studenten die Studienrichtung wechseln oder für eine gewisse Ausbildung an einer anderen Uni einen besseren Studienplatz hätten – dies aber mangels Transparenz in die Entscheidungsfindung nicht mit einbeziehen.

Mit einem Ranking und einer Beurteilung der Qualität einer Uni in den verschiedenen Fakultäten, schafft man Transparenz und damit auch Wettbewerb. Und dies ist der zweite Aspekt des Rankings der sehr positiv ist. Was in anderen Ländern schon seit Jahren gang und gäbe ist, beginnt sich nun hier erst recht zu bewegen. Damit entsteht auch ein gewisser Wettbewerb unter den Uni's, sich neuen Trends zu stellen und qualitativ sich zu verbessern.

Ich verstehe nicht, warum die Uni's das Ranking nicht als Chance verstehen, sich dem Wettbewerb zu stellen und sogar positiv an Verbesserungen und Veränderungen teilzunehmen bzw. sie sogar zu gestalten. Jedes Unternehmen führt Befragungen durch, misst die Kundenzufriedenheit und die Verbesserungen, ist tagtäglich in einem Ranking – warum also nicht auch die Universitäten? Denn, im Ausland müssen sie dies nämlich ohnehin tun. Dort ist der Wettbewerb gnadenlos und nur die besten haben international Chancen sich zu profilieren.

My Vision

My vision is that technology in education will become both ubiquitous and invisible at the same time.  That education through technology will become the great liberator and equalizer, helping teachers of every culture, geography and discipline ensure, not that no child is left behind, but that all children are brought forward.  That the potential of technology will be fully realized where every student has access to an education, every teacher feels confident in their use of technology and learning opportunities that could not have been thought possible to my generation will be common place to children of all future generations.

My vision is that no teacher should fear technology, be threatened by it or replaced by it.  That the integration of technology into the classroom will be as easy and as necessary as the use of a pencil or book is now.

Today many educators view technology as the proverbial glass half full, a promise yet to be kept or at best a work in progress.  Edward R. Murrow once said, “This instrument can teach, it can illuminate; yes, and it can even inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. Otherwise it is merely wires and lights in a box”.  He was speaking of the television in 1958, but the same could be said of the computer in today’s schools.

Some educators have made great strides with technology, yet many barriers lie before us.  Computers are too expensive, content consists of a patchwork of offerings, the computer learning environment is not universally reliable and most teachers still feel uncomfortable trying to manage technology in the classroom.  In time these barriers will fall but the questions of when and how are not easily answered.

My vision is to accelerate the removal of these barriers, but I am a realist.  I cannot lower the cost of computers, I am not in the business of creating content and I cannot train every teacher how to combine curriculum with technology.  My contribution is to help create tools that make technology easier to use for teachers.  To that end the measure of my success will not be the amount of sales GenevaLogic generates, the growth in the monetary value of the company or how well our products compare to the competition.  The measure of my success will be how many teachers and students derive benefit from technology through the use of our products.

At the beginning of this article I said my vision was that someday technology in education would be invisible.  It sounds like a strange concept, to make something with so much potential benefit irrelevant.  But that would miss the point.  The technology, the wires, the pixels, the disk drives and all the rest are just tools.  Their relevance lies not in that they exist at all, rather, their relevance is determined by how those who educate and those who learn use them.  If we, who are in the business of developing technology for educational purposes succeed in putting the focus on the educator and the learner then we succeed in realizing the full benefits of technology in education.  That is my vision.
